Occupational Therapy Driver Assessment

Driver trained occupational therapists conduct initial assessment to determine if the participant has potential to achieve licensing standards, establish driver training programs, provide therapeutic intervention and prescribe vehicle modifications if applicable.

Occupational Therapy Driver Assessment contains two parts

  1. Clinical Assessment:
    • An interview and functional assessment, which may include:
      • Your medical history.
      • Your driving history.
      • Your physical and sensory function.
      • Evaluation of cognitive function
      • An understanding of general road law.

  1. Road Assessment:
    • This assessment takes place in a dual-controlled car, either automatic or manual, with one of our specialised driving instructors sitting at the front passenger’s seat and the assessor sitting at the back seat.
    • It starts from a large car park. The process will be determined by the participant’s driving experience. For instance, the on road assessment may remain in the car park to focus on fundamental vehicle operational skills if the participant doesn’t have any on road experience.
    • A passenger’s activity may be included to further assess the participant’s process of visual information.

A comprehensive report outlining how specialised driver training will benefit the NDIS participants will be submitted to NDIS together with a quote for specialised driver training. Once the quote is approved, we will be in touch to arrange driving lessons.
